In 2014, Tonya had a massive hyperthyroid attack and sudden onset of autoimmune joint pain. She was told that there was no chance of recovery and that she would lose her thyroid, either through radioactive iodine poisoning or surgery, and become dependent on synthetic thyroid hormone for the rest of her life.
Refusing to accept that prognosis, she believed that healing was possible, despite what her doctors were telling her. Two months later, her thyroid hormones had leveled out enough that she was able to stop taking the heart and thyroid medications and just focus on healing naturally 100%. Seven years later, she still has her thyroid and her autoimmune symptoms are gone. Here is her story in her own words:
“I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism through bloodwork. My General Practitioner (GP) was very rude to me at first, dismissing my symptoms until he was able to view the labs. The endocrinologist put me on methimazole, a thyroid hormone lowering medication, and a heart rate lowering medication, both of which were temporary solutions. They tested me for all the joint and thyroid-related autoimmune disorders, but I tested negative for all of them. I went to the best, out-of-pocket, holistic doctors I could find, and still, none of them ever recommended any of the the things I chose to do on my own that healed me. One doctor was supportive of “doing whatever I was doing because it was working.” I remember her being shocked that I was willing to do something like the GAPS diet in order to heal.
In the first couple of months after I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I was very busy going to various doctors appointments and scrambling for answers. The things I focused on to heal myself at this time were prayer, research, and eating a clean diet. After my thyroid levels got back to normal and I wasn’t taking meds or going to so many doctor’s appointments anymore, I felt free to try more hardcore diets. I started out with GAPS + AIP elimination diets. I’ve experimented with numerous healing protocols over the years – including low carb, fasting routines, and traditional food diets. I’ve experienced the most success with Aajonus Vonderplanitz’ raw paleo diet, and today, I eat mostly raw foods. My health is always the best when I’m stimulant- and alcohol-free and sleeping really well. I learned to prioritize sleep early on in my healing journey because if I didn’t get to bed by 10 pm, I would have terrible insomnia, sometimes not being able to sleep all night. Exercise, mindfulness techniques, detox routines, and trauma processing have also been important parts of my healing.
Regarding mindfulness techniques, it’s such a broad subject, but one thing I’ve done in particular is meditation, specifically the manifesting type of meditation, similar to what Joe Dispenza promotes in his book, “Becoming Supernatural.” I believe in the power of our own thoughts and feelings to heal ourselves. I’m also a mother and my youngest was an infant when I was first diagnosed. That was an extra challenge that left me with tremendous empathy and compassion for people in similar situations, and I wanted to find a way to help others achieve hope and healing.
