John is a Radical Remission survivor of stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Diagnosed at the age of 56, he combined conventional and alternative methods to overcome incredible odds. 5 years later, he has no evidence of disease. Here is his story in his own words:
“I became sick in January 2011. Initially diagnosed as a gall bladder problem, after surgery to remove my gall bladder, I became rapidly sicker. Extensive testing showed a tumor on the head of my pancreas and in May 2011 I underwent a six hour Whipple Procedure surgery. Six weeks later, scans showed that although the surgery had been 100% successful, it had metastasized to my liver where I had a 2cm tumor. Even though chemo would go ahead, I was stage 4 and would probably live for less than 12 months. After 2 months of treatment the tumor in my liver disappeared and as of this month – July 2016 – I am a 1-in-15,000 five-year survivor of stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
During the early weeks of my chemotherapy I received several sessions of Reiki Healing. I really feel that those sessions helped me focus on thinking about healing and the possibility of overcoming the cancer. This directly led to an improvement in my emotional status and feelings of positivity.
I now speak at events at New York Presbyterian Hospital, for The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and The American Cancer Society. I recently became a volunteer counselor/mentor for The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and give support to current patients and their care-givers at the monthly meeting of the Pancreatic Cancer Support Group at NYP. My story was featured in the March issue of AARP’s “Bulletin” magazine and I strive to bring awareness to the fact that by 2020, pancreatic cancer will be one of the top three killer cancers, but currently receives only TWO PERCENT of Federal funding for cancer research.”
